Something Great
There’s this deep, inborn desire in me to do something great for the world. And I think we all have it in some form or another. It welled up inside of me today as I was watching the end scenes of a video game I beat. It was a role-playing game about saving the world and I found myself so desiring to do something that would help the world like the characters in the video game did. There’s something in all of us that resonates with that, which is why RPGs (role-playing games) are so popular.
We all want to help others. College kids get passionate about the latest causes, whether they’re about AIDS in Africa or civil rights in the Middle East. In fact, in a way, the whole American culture holds this value in high regard. If only we could do something to leave an indelible mark on the world, then our lives will mean something.
I have always thought that if I could change someone’s life, then my life would have been worth-while. Like if I did something great, then I wouldn’t be a waste. Although I think that our definitions of greatness can be skewed, I do actually think this is possible. I don’t think God would have wired us to desire something like this if it weren’t attainable. But I think we need to redefine what greatness is and how to most impact the world.
We always think of greatness on the grand scale. We think that more is better and that it’s not quality, but quantity. Millions is better than one. But I don’t think that our deepest desires of greatness will be fulfilled by the millions.
We also think that we have to do it all. We have to accomplish everything by ourselves to be truly great. Team work or only doing a part of the job isn’t good enough. But sometimes greatness may come through only having a hand to play in the grander story or by taking the assistant role in the act of greatness.
I think that greatness is held up in the power of Christ. It’s not about our glory or what we can do for the most amount of people, but it’s about what Christ can do through us in the most eternal way. Sometimes we have a small part to play in one person’s life, instead of the world-saving grandness of the video game I was playing. Sometimes, it’s a kind word spoken at the right moment or a helping hand when someone needs it the most. We don’t need to cure AIDS or free everyone from civil bondage (although those would be awesome) in order for us to be great. We just need to let Christ free in our lives to direct us to what He has planned for our greatness.
Ephesians 2:10 - For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
