Picnics and Jesus
From Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden
‘Imagine that a church picnic is being held at a nearby park. You have many errands to run after the service and don’t get around to packing your picnic lunch. You rush home a few minutes before the picnic begins to throw a lunch together. All you find in your refrigerator is a shriveled piece of baloney, two slices of stale bread and some crusty mustard remains. You slap it together and rush off to the park. When you arrive, you happen to sit at a table already occupied by a large family. You lay your spread out on the table – a puny baloney sandwich. The family proceeds to take from their enormous picnic basket golden-brown fried chicken, mouth-watering potato salad, baked beans that have been simmering for days and two beautiful chocolate cream pies. They look at your baloney sandwich and make an invitation: “Why don’t we put it together?” You protest, but the cook says, “Oh, come on, there’s plenty of everything – and we just love baloney sandwiches. Let’s just put it all together.” You came to the picnic a pauper and are eating like a king.
We came into this world as orphans and Jesus adopted us into his eternal family. “Let’s put it all together,” the Lord says to us. “Let me draw you into my life, for that is the purpose for which you exist.” The Father and Son say to us through the living presence of the Holy Spirit, “Everything that we are and have is available to you.”’
